Positive aspects of tourism in Alvão and

Mondim de Basto:

·   It brings money because it promotes new job´s opportunities in tourism (hotels, restaurants, local products shops and supermarkets);

Location of Alvão Natural Park
THE MOUNTAIN
In the north of Portugal, between Vila Real and Mondim de Basto, there is this
little haven called the Alvão Natural Park. It was established in 1983 and covers just
70 square kilometres, but it is home to endangered bird and animal species. Fisgas

do Ermelo, one of Europe’s largest waterfalls, is a huge attraction in Alvão.

Compared to other parks, this one is quite small, but its relief is varied. The park
is split into two areas: the higher one, rising up to 1,000 metres or more, includes
Alvão Mountain and the Lamas de Olo plateau. The area at lower altitude consists
of valleys and the River Olo, where we can find the villages of Ermelo and Fervença.
HOW PEOPLE LIVE
People live in the middle of nature where they can enjoy beautiful landscapes
and contemplate nature.
Days pass slowly the Alvão villages. Although the locals are busy with farming
activities, like herding the cattle, working in the fields and cooking bread, they’re
always ready to welcome visitors. Visitors can enjoy their hospitality and try the

traditional smoked meats with a slice of bread baked in a wood-fired oven.

THE VILLAGES (HOUSES)
The villages are developed essentially in mountain areas. They are mostly built
on the slopes and next to rivers or streams. The buildings of two floors predominate,
some in schist and others in granite, with divisional roofs, with tile and slate.
The houses are mainly for housing, but there are also examples of old houses

that currently serve as livestock shelters.

ENDANGERED SPECIES
There are endagered species such as:
• Royal eagle
• Iberian wolf, are in extinction due to the construction of the dams
as the wolf packs are separated, thus making it more difficult to renew the
species.
• Blue butterfly

WHAT IS ECO-TOURISM?
Eco-tourism means travelling in a responsible way to natural places, different
cultures and environments. It also involves the well-being of the local people
and conservation work.
Everybody who wants to help the environment and to protect places, animals
on plants that are in danger can be an eco-tourist. Of course, eco-tourists stop
work and enjoy themselves like anyone on holiday. The world is a better place
because of their work.
ACTIVITIES THAT AN ECO-TOURIST CAN DO:
• Make voluntary work;

• Pick up the rubbish while you are
walking in the tracks;
• Be careful with plants;
• Birdwatching;
• Trekking;
• Contact with the local community;
• Be a shepherd for a day;
• Pick up mushrooms with locals;
• Visit the eco-museum in Arnal, that recreates the environment of a
traditional village in Serra do Alvão;
• Rafting down the various watercourses and then recover from your
efforts in a banquet of excellent regional gastronomy including delicacies such
as meatballs and roasted veal, with high-quality meat from the “maronesa”
autochthonous race of cattle.

Steps to a better environment
These are small actions you can take every day:
➢ Bring your own bags;
➢ Spend some time in your garden;
➢ Cut down on your energy use;
➢ Use the same bottle sometimes;
➢ Plant trees;
➢ Turn off your devices;
➢ Choose local products;
➢ Save water;
➢ Recycle;
➢ Use public transports;
➢ Take a shower instead of a bath;
➢ Buy second hand;
➢ Eat less meat;
➢ Get one or more plants for inside your home;
➢ Before you decide to throw away clothes, goods or materials,
take the time to figure out if such can be recycled or reused.

Eco-tourism in Alvão

Alvão Natural Park is just one and a half hours driving from Oporto, and still it is one of the most interesting and less known protected areas of northern Portugal (Mondim de Basto and Vila Real). Peoples income in this mountain range is based on agricultural and pastoral activities that moulded the landscape.
Associated to this agro system are water meadows with great floral activity and local breeds like themaronesacattle. Here the balance between man and nature allows for the presence of endangered species like the alcon large blue butterfly (Maculinea Alcon) and the Iberian Wolf.
Tourists who visit this region can also help nature conservation. They can do eco-tourism.

Eco-tourism is a form of tourism involving responsible travelling to natural areas conserving the environment, and improving the well-being of the local people.

How can you do eco-tourism in Alvão?
- Pick wild mushrooms and help in sweet chestnut harvest;
- Collect litter while you walk;
- Be careful with the plants, specially rare species;
- Bird watching;
- Walk with the shepherd;
- Contact with the local communities.
